Her adventure took her to Baguio City and the breathtaking mountains of Benguet, where she traded sunshine for jackets, fog, and temperatures that made her question every clothing decision she had ever made.

Welcome to Baguio: Where Air Conditioning Is Basically Unemployed

Jessica’s journey began in Baguio City, one of her favorite places in the Philippines. Known for its pine trees, mountain roads, cool weather, and delicious food, Baguio offered the perfect escape from the usual tropical heat.

She was excited to return, although driving through the winding mountain roads was another story. Buses kept overtaking her, and Baguio traffic was ready to test her patience. Apparently, even a city famous for its refreshing climate cannot escape the universal problem of traffic jams!

At Cafe by the Ruins, she enjoyed local dishes and freshly baked bread. Best of all, she realized there was no need for air conditioning. Imagine entering a restaurant and being grateful that nobody turned on the AC!

Mount Pulag: From Tropical Girl to Human Popsicle

The real adventure began when Jessica headed to Mount Pulag, famous for its sea of clouds and spectacular sunrise views. She prepared her camping gear, joined an organized hiking group, and set off with experienced guide Coach Manny.

The trail included rain, muddy paths, a beautiful mossy forest, and a campsite where temperatures could drop dramatically. Jessica initially expected around 15–16°C, but the mountain had other plans. Temperatures felt closer to 8–10°C, with the possibility of dropping even lower overnight.

Suddenly, those winter jackets sold in Philippine malls finally made sense. Somewhere out there, every person who had ever asked, “Who actually buys these?” was receiving their answer.

Jessica spent the night in a tent, enjoyed a warm dinner, and woke up around 4 a.m. to reach the summit. The famous sea of clouds was initially replaced by thick fog and approximately three meters of visibility. Nature really said, “You came all this way? Here’s a white screen!”

Luckily, the clouds eventually parted briefly, revealing a breathtaking view that made the freezing trek worthwhile.

Strawberry Taho, Mountain Food, and Unexpected Lessons

After descending, Jessica treated herself to strawberry taho and an unusual local combination: strawberry coffee. She also explored Baguio’s food scene, tried traditional *pinikpikan*, and enjoyed reconnecting with local artists and friendly people.

Her conversations with Coach Manny highlighted something deeper than beautiful scenery: hiking helps people appreciate comfortable beds, warm homes, nature, and the communities living in the mountains.

The Philippines Has a Cold Side, Too!

Jessica’s adventure proved that the Philippines isn’t all beaches, sunshine, and summer outfits. Mountain destinations like Mount Pulag can get extremely cold, especially at night and during wet weather.

Planning to follow her footsteps? Bring warm layers, waterproof clothing, suitable hiking gear, and plenty of preparation. Check trail conditions and travel advisories before leaving, too.

Because in the Philippines, you might pack sunscreen for one trip and thermal wear for the next.
